Handheld XRF Element Analyzer--Consumer goods (toys) RoHS testing

Mar 27,2024

Toys play a crucial role in nurturing children's interests, raising awareness, and fostering intellectual development. With a wide array of options available, children's toys are typically crafted from materials like metal, plastic, and polymers, often coated with various colored paints. Additionally, electronic toys incorporate various electronic components. However, these materials and components may contain hazardous substances, posing potential health risks, particularly for children, especially infants and toddlers, who interact uniquely with toys.

Exposure to hazardous substances concealed in toys can severely impact the human body. Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) are noteworthy examples: Lead (Pb) can hinder blood synthesis, potentially causing anemia or, if it enters the bloodstream, inflicting damage to brain tissue. Cadmium (Cd), with a biological half-life of 10 to 30 years, accumulates in organs like the liver or kidneys, leading to harm. Arsenic (As), typically found in compounds like arsine, binds rapidly to red blood cells upon entering the body, causing irreversible damage to cell membranes and direct toxic effects on vital organs like the heart, liver, and lungs.

The European Union's directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment, implemented since July 1, 2006, prohibits the use of six toxic and hazardous substances: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in products entering the EU market.

The analysis conducted by Terras Scientific utilizing the EulerX 900, an advanced handheld XRF elemental analyzer, demonstrates the measurement of hazardous elements – cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and bromine (Br) – in five types of ABS plastics. The results exhibit a strong linear correlation with the standard values, with a coefficient of determination (R2) exceeding 0.99 for all elements, showcasing the instrument's exceptional accuracy and precision.

Additionally, a repeatability test was conducted on the same ABS plastic, analyzing it ten times using the EulerX 900. The results, expressed in parts per million (PPM), reveal a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 4% for the analysis of the five hazardous elements, indicating the instrument's excellent repeatability and stability.

RoHS testing not only holds significance for environmental protection and consumer health but also contributes to enhancing product quality and bolstering the reputation of businesses, fostering their sustainable development. Leveraging the EulerX 900 handheld XRF elemental analyzer enables rapid and accurate RoHS component analysis, making it an invaluable asset in RoHS compliance assessments.
